My Career in Academia – Conditions and Perspectives
An increasing number of academics completes a doctoral degree and aims for a career in academia. Competition becomes harder and the selection criteria for postdoctoral positions and professorships are tough. Therefore: Be aware of the selection criteria and the overall conditions of the academic world and reflect these on your own career path!
The aim of this workshop is to identify the cornerstones that are indispensable for a successful academic career nowadays and, thereupon, to shed light on your own career:
* Where do I stand? Where do I want to go? Academic career – yes or no?
* What are the overall conditions for an academic career (with focus on the German system)?
* Of what aspects does the academic career portfolio consist?
* Should I think about other career paths besides the professorship? If so, why and how?
The workshop will clarify the career paths in the academic system – with focus on Germany and with some reports of experiences in other countries. In addition, impulses for other career opportunities, including research-related ones, will be provided. You will get information and suggestions on how to develop further career options for yourself.
(Please note: Within our 1-day-workshop, it is not possible to deal with topics that go beyond this, e.g. deepening career paths outside academia or application strategies such as „How do I prepare myself for an academic interview procedure?“ „What is my personal plan B?“ „Which companies are interesting or relevant to me?“ „Where does an application make sense to me?“)
