Fracture toughness is one of the most critical properties of structural materials. But what determines whether a material deforms in a ductile way or cleaves in a brittle fashion? How can toughness be increased? And what is detrimental to fracture toughness? These questions can only be addressed at the atomic scale, where the bonds between atoms, their arrangement, and defects in this arrangement are directly considered. This presentation will provide an overview of the main factors determining fracture toughness and how atomic-scale simulations can be used to identify material-specific toughening mechanisms.
