„Gap Test Consequences for Quasibrittle Fracture Mechanics, Scaling and HRR Theory of Metal Fracture“

Prof. Bažant will propose a fundamental change in fracture mechanics. Showing that the crack-parallel stresses (σxx, σzz, σxz,) can change the material fracture energy by about ±100 %, he concludes that the line crack models (LEFM, XFEM, cohesive crack model) are usable only if these stresses are negligible. In general, a tensorial damage simulation of a fracture front with finite width is necessary.
