Soft Skill Training „Gender Equality in Research“

On July 19, 2019 the Soft Skill Training „Gender Equality in Research“ which is mandatory to all doctoral researchers of the Research Training Group GRK 2423 FRASCAL took place at the Zentralinstitut for Scientific Computing (ZISC). It was guided by Dr. Silke Schnurbusch from the Graduate Centre of the FAU. Common gender related topics occurring in research were pointed out and vividly discussed.

The workshop started with an introduction round which highlighted the strong diversity within the group of FRASCAL’s doctoral students. Afterwards, Dr. Schnurbusch presented gender equality measures at the FAU and gave an overview of recently published literature outcomes and remaining open questions.This stimulated a discussion round were topics such as parental leave, quotas, gender inequality in everyday life, etc. where openly addressed. Following this, Dr. Magda Luthay, representative of FAU’s Gender and Diversity office, introduced support programs of the university and also answered general topic-related questions. Personal ideas and experiences were shared, when the participants discussed in smaller groups how they were affected or influenced by gender related issues. The conclusions were subsequently presented to the others.

Overall, the workshop gave a first insight into gender equality in research and inspired many discussions during the subsequent joint barbeque.
